Students use a website Start-To-Finish.com to access all of their novels. Students each have their own login and password (typically their first initial and last name) where they can independently read their books, and also complete comprehension quizzes at the end of each chapter. The site also tracks their progress and keeps record of all of their reading and quizzes. Students also like to use BrainPop.com and SparkNotes.com to learn about authors and see short stories and interactive videos based on what they are reading.
So far this year students have read an adapted version of Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens and they are currently reading Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson. Students really enjoy using this site and the interactive features that it offers. They also each complete a short writing piece at the end of each reading, as well as completing many multi-sensory lessons to support the books.
iPads: Students all have access to iPads in the classroom. They use them on an almost daily basis to complete their quizzes, gain information using the Internet, or use an app, Inspiration, to make graphic organizers of their work. Students are able to navigate the iPads independently and they have become a very valuable tool in our classroom.
Homework: Students will periodically have homework in Language Arts class, depending on what we are working on in the classroom. Please email me with any questions or concerns about this at [email protected].
